Follicles are the pre-egg cells that you are born with, At puberty, some follicles begin to mature and grow, each month.

Ovulation, or the release of an egg cell, usually happens in the middle of your cycle, about two weeks before your period.

These specialized structures are attached to the uterus with ligaments. Their primary job is conception, or getting pregnant. Ovaries also make important hormones that affect your whole body throughout your life. 

 

Ovaries contain millions of tiny follicles at birth, but only some go on to develop into egg cells. Typically, one egg cell is releasesed each month, and travels through the fallopian tube into the uterus.
